An incredible tragic-comic quest for the holy meaning of the the life of Graham Chapman – serial alcoholic, amateur mountaineer, pioneering gay icon – and the only remaining non-living member of Monty Python.

Written by Three’s Company’s Tom Crawshaw for award-winning actor George Telfer, the story follows the Python star as he struggles to come to terms with his terminal cancer and to reconnect to his estranged lover David Sherlock.

He explores and recounts his extraordinary life, seen through the lens of the anarchic Python comic style.

In sixty minutes we visit his antics at medical school, his position at the cutting edge of the British comedy revolution of the 60s, his coming out as one of Britain’s first high-profile homosexuals and his battle to defeat alcoholism, only to be hit by throat cancer at 48.

The play unveils one of life’s true eccentrics – a man of truly hilarious, exciting and dangerous extremes – who remains surprisingly little-known despite the massive global success of Monty Python’s sketches and films.

After a sell-out run at the Buxton and Edinburgh Fringes this July and August, Not The Messiah tours the UK this January, starting with a week at the renowned developer of new writing in London – Theatre 503.
