Secret Gig Announced!

Our mysterious alter-egos 'Comedy Trio' appear to have followed us up to Edinburgh and have managed to wangle themselves a secret gig at the Pleasance at tonight!

In the guise of Martin Brady-Small, Jon Grimshaw and Jazz L Carter, we'll be staging a performance of A Live Transmission of 'Adventure Time' - the interactive mock-radio-comedy show we've been developing this year.

Comedy Trio will be attemting to record - and stream live on the internet - two episodes of their new radio show: a murderously funny film-noir sppof and a murder mystery to die for. This spoof-tacular, pun-dimensional show looks set to be the perfect way to end the Festival on a bang - featuring missing actresses, audience voiced-aliens and rebellious technology.

Although it's a secret gig, we're announcing the details here on our blog. It's all kicking off at quarter past midnight (12:15am) tonight (Saturday 29th August) in the Jack Dome (Pleasance Dome). And entrance is free with the code-word "Scarlett".

Critical Acclaim for Play On Words 2009

Well we're a week into our Edinburgh Fringe run of Play On Words at the Pleasance Dome and have our first reviews out. Great to see the show going down so well already.

Extracts below and links to the full thing. (We'll update as they come in)

"A script that crackles with vitality and exuberance showing a great command of the language that is used throughout - whether through clever punning or the artillery of quick-barbed remarks that they have at their disposal - the result highly innovative and enthralling.
Energy and originality compete with each other right through to the conclusion. Outstanding"
AllTheFestivals.com - read it here

"Sizziling with intellectual jokes and wonderfully witty puns. The shift in tempo from funny to serious was remarkably well-handled. Three's Company are absolutely aware of what they're doing and are all the better for it!"
Three Weeks - read it here

"Finely constructed and intriguingly woven... fresh and alive throughout. A graceful waltz through words and how they are used."
Remote Goat - read it here

"Sophisitcated and extremely funny... It makes great use of puns - luckily they're excellent. Crawshaw is the master of his materials." The Spectator- read it here

"Fine word play... well-judged and dark. I can tell you that all is explained, and the explanation hurts. Words aren't just to be played with, it turns out; words can lead to tragedy, too." Fringe Guru - read it here

A nice start to the festival...

Just a quick one - happy to announce* that second day out of previews and we've had our first full house!

And if that's not enough, we've also got our first review - and it's five stars.

In other news, we're having a great time: the Pleasance is excellent, venue staff are lovely, our house is very nice (though leaky), and we've already seen some top shows. So all is looking pretty rosey for the month ahead...

Hmmm... I hope we don't use up our full allocation of good luck in the first week...

We'll keep you posted. Follow @ThreesCompany on twitter for more regular updates.

PS: Ticket sales for the days ahead are looking pretty good too, so book in advance if you're planning to come along.

New Jens please

New casting developments here at our Wimbledon studio - none of them related to the sudden increase of ball games in the SW19 area.

A series of unfortunate coincidences have lead to us having to recast our leading lady for the upcoming tour of Play On Words. We are therefore very pleased to announce that one Meriel Rosenkranz will be joining us in the role of Jen this year.

More information about this exciting young actress to follow.

Announcement: Summer Tour 2009

After a hard month of negotiations, we're very proud to announce confirmed plans for Three's Company's 2009 Summer Tour.

By popular demand, 2007's award-winning, sell-out hit Play On Words will return, starring all three of Michael Grady-Hall, Tom Crawshaw and Yaz Al-Shaater. We're over the moon to be performing a full show together again for the first time since 2005! In an act of reckless hubris, we have further decided to rotate the three male roles (Fred, Eddie & Jonnie) so we each play a different part each night.

We are particularly pleased to announce that the show has been chosen to appear at the Pleasance Dome at the Edinburgh Fringe - a venue which has hosted such internationally famous acts as Cheek By Jowl, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The League Of Gentlemen, Bill Bailey, and The Mighty Boosh. We'll be there, as part of the world's biggest arts festival, every day from 5th - 31st August.

Of course we'll be bringing the show home to the Buxton Fringe in July as well - where we'll also be running a cracking line up at Underground Venues - and to London in June (venue tbc). There also plans to take the show further after Edinburgh.

We're very proud to welcome Mariam Bell (who you may have seen in our mini-play Dreams May Come) who will be taking the role of Jen for the tour.

This does not, however, mean that our other work on Adventure Time and the development of Auditorium has been put on hold. Workshops will continue over the next few months - so look for announcements soon!

Finally, our thanks to all those in our all-new Support Scheme - who have made, and continue to make, this work possible.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year

Three's Company wish you all a very Merry Christmas. None of us are in London over the Holidays, Yaz is in Edinburgh, Tom's in Denton and I'm in Chapel (just near Buxton). But work will begin anew in 2009.

The next year looks set to be a very exciting one for Three's Company. 2009 is going to be the year of inter-reactivity. The company will be exploring and developing the ideas used in Auditorium and A Live Transmisson of 'Adventure Time', with the plan for a spectacular new interactive show in Edinburgh in the early stgaes.

So have a great Xmas, and come back to the website in the new year to find out more about 3C's exciting new plans.

The Auditorium is now closed.

So that's the end of another Edinburgh Fringe. And what a great one it was too. I'm so sorry that I couldn't have been up there for longer because I know everyone had such a brilliant time.

Congratulations to David, Will, Kate, Amr, Ben, Kayleigh, Ceili, John and Jo. And of course to Tom and Yaz for another Edinburgh success.

Thanks to everyone who came to see the show, and you guys that didn't... well...

I'm sure this is not the end for Auditorium, keep you're eyes on the website for more exciting interactive theatre experimentation!

Back in the Hoodies

Well our hoodies have finally arrived and they look great! They might be a little late* but they're still earlier than last year... and look even better!

Thanks to Haz Al-Shaater for handling most of the design, and to the ever-lovely Elderfield Studios for printing them so beautifully, quickly, and at such a great price.

We've also got a number of limited edition Auditorium T Shirts for sale at the bargain price of £7.50. Drop us a line if you'd like to get hold of one - all proceed go towards funding future productions.

*I should probably point out that it Yaz's fault they're late, not the printers!

Interactivity & 'Auditorium'

This is the first in a series of blog posts about interactivity and the theory behind Auditorium.

What do we mean when we claim to be the first fully interactive farce? Well of course it all comes down to your definition of interactivity - and whether you can quantify the level of interaction in a piece. We're trying to avoid what I call the four pitfalls of interactivity, based on the work I've seen and studied over the last few years.

For us, the challenge we set ourselves was to create a consistent narrative with a decent story arc and compelling development whilst still allowing the audience to truly affect the show. Moreover, we wanted to do this without ever stepping out of character or breaking the illusion, and without limiting the audience to the constraints of finite 'multiple choice' theatre.

There's a lot of theatre out there where you can interact with the characters - 'immersive' or 'site specific' theatre, and works by the likes of dreamthinkspeak or Punchdrunk. In these works your individual 'narrative' (eg experience) might be interactive, but the story of the piece is largely untouched by your actions. There's also increasing amounts of theatre where you can interact with the narrative - works inspired by the 'choose your own adventure' series, works where you can vote for an ending, even arguably impro shows. But in these cases you only deal with out of character performers, narrators, or technology, and not the characters themselves.

Perhaps what makes Auditorium different is that we're trying to make a piece where you can interact with both the characters and the story – so you can play the story rather than just watch the play.

If you've any thoughts on these ideas, or seen the play and wish to comment on whether we've achieved this, please tell us your thoughts in the comments below. We'll be writing soon about our 'Four Pitfalls' of interactivity, and about some of the ways that audiences have reacted to this convention.

This is the first in a series of blog posts about interactivity and the theory behind Auditorium.

The reviews come flooding in!

We've had our first few reviews for 'Auditorium' at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Below are extracts from each and below that are links to the full articles. We'll add more here as we get them. Watch this space!

"I don't think I've ever seen fourth-wall chicanery worked into a farce - not, that is, till I came across Tom Crawshaw's magnificent Auditorium, an original work for Fringe veterans Three's Company."
"There's word-play which could have been taken straight out of Stoppard, existentialist debates, and an hilarious deconstruction of the audience itself. But as the story wears on, it gets raunchier, funnier and faster, with Crawshaw's script pressing into service all the elements of classic farce."
"Farce, existentialism, and a dose of the X-Files: I'd never have thought it a winning combination. But this continually entertaining and warm-hearted play proves that anything's possible."
***** FringeGuru

"Three's Company, the creators of last year's Fringe hit, Play On Words, are offering another hilariously interactive experimental comedy this year."
"Crawshaw's script blends impressively with the improvised moments and it is often impossible to tell whether the person sitting next to you is an ignorant audience member or a slyly placed plant. In short, this clever play is not just highly amusing, but also something you're unlikely to see elsewhere."
**** Broadway Baby

"The action begins the moment you enter the performance space and the show is great all the way through."
"On one level this play is funny and silly, and on another level it is clever and raises some important questions; most importantly, it had everyone laughing out loud and it left me feeling thoroughly entertained. This play was odd, but brilliant, and well worth seeing."
****Three Weeks

"Breaking the fourth wall is a bold move for any show - stage or screen - to make, and most who use that method are cagey about it. Auditorium doesn't dip its toe in the water, it dives in holding a bag of air and a rock."
"A remarkable achievement... All in all, this is one of the fresher offerings around."
**** Hairline

"Tom Crawshaw's script is quite excellent"
"A tongue-in-cheek Cache for the stage - makes for many laughs and a wistful finale"
"A well-delivered and curious performance"

****
Fest Magazine

"
Any battle cries from the miserabilist anti-Fringers, who suggest that innovation is waning at this year's festival, should be silenced by this pacey, part-improv theatre piece."
The Scotsman

"Tom Crawshaw’s play has some clever variations on the fourth wall-busting theme. It thrives on surprise, making you suspicious of whether the person next to you is an actor or just a regular audience member."
"The ingenious premise, a series of brilliant little coups de theatre and some strong comic performances make this a very watchable show from an inventive young company."
The Stage

"Think Six Characters In Search Of An Author mixed with Being John Malkevich, written as a farce by Philip K Dick, and you'll get a faint idea of the tone and style of this new work by the company behind last year's Play On Words."
"Auditorium is a gloriously diverting, sprawling, anarchic mess of a play (and I do mean that as a compliment). It moves at a cracking pace and is often very funny indeed. Its use of the audience is very clever."

A great Edinburgh weekend!

I have just got back from Edinburgh (I've been there for the weekend) and am now back in rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet.

I just wanted to send a congratulations to all the cast and crew working on 'Auditorium' up there. The show on Saturday was fantastic. If anybody has not yet worked out when they are going to see 'the world's first interactive farce' do it now.

Oh and guys, congratulations on your four stars in 'Three Weeks'.

Saw this show on the 17th Aug at the Fringe. With out a doubt the best play I've ever seen! Brilliant crowd interaction and I was laughing throughout the entire performance.

I loved the idea of getting an audience member's mobile number for an actor to call and all the other quips that drew the crowd in - even the concessions guy was a great addition.

I didn't know what to expect after receiving a leaflet in the streets but am glad I came along! Hoping to bring a friend along next time I see it again which will be soon!

Thanks for the great performance - made my Fringe Festival!

Saw this a group of friends at the Fringe on 18th August. It was the existentialism that drew me in, but I didn't expect it to be Pirandello meets panto!

A fantastically original take on the whole "fourth wall" thing; shamelessly intellectual without sacrificing the belly laughs. And, quite possibly, the cheapest way to get on stage at Edinburgh!

Texan Tragi-Comedy?

Congratulations to Tom, whose Play On Words has been chosen to be performed in a High School theatre festival in Austin, Texas. Following Three's Company's successful Edinburgh Fringe production of the play (as part of its first ever UK tour) it attracted a number of offers from directors from around the globe.

Play On Words will hopefully be seen closer to home in the not-too-distant future, with plans for a Three's Company revival on the cards...

End of the Summer Tour

Well, it's over. Our last night was... well, last night, and that concluded our 46-date-tour.

Thanks to all of you that came to see us! We've yet to receive exact audience figures, but we know we had roughly one-and-a-half thousand audience through our doors between Crash Course and Play On Words, in London, Buxton and Edinburgh. The tour was a great success - we got some great reviews and feedback, and just about covered our costs - and has opened up some exciting possibilities for the future... but you'll have to come back later to find out what they are!

To keep up to date with what we're up to next, you can keep checking back to this blog (or subscribe by atom or rss) or join our mailing list.

Finally - congratulation to Tom - 21 today!

Dear company of clever actors/directors/writers...etc.,

i had the opportunity last night to see said play and was blown away by what your show had to offer. kudos to the clever turn of phrase, interesting approach to the tech, and boldness that accompanied your choices onstage. i was wary in the first half hour, i didn't know how you would be able to suistain that banter for an hour and a half....but as you continued on i saw so much more. i think you found a nice balance between confusion, chaos and straight plot line. no metaphor was too blatant and no action was too overstated. it was an enjoyable night at the theatre (i had to search through a lot of ''shows'' to find something worth seeing). i wish i had something to say critically so this blog isn't just to stroke egos and praise the show, and perhaps if i see the show again i would have something critical to say, however...i (obviously) have nothing but glowing reviews and recomendations for my fellow fringe watchers. best of luck to you. if you ever want to cross the atlantic to start goin global...be in touch, your company has a fan/supporter/contact in new york now.

'Play On Words' selling out

That's right folks - three days into our run in Edinburgh and we had our first sell-out show last night!
We're used to having to turn people away from shows in Buxton but in Edinburgh this was a big surprise to us all. The tragi-comedy of quick-witted punning, over-shaken drinks bottles and overflowing swear jars seems to be going down a storm north of the border.
We now await the publication of our first review which we expect from Three Weeks any day soon...
Watch this space - if the show continues to sell-out you may need to book in advance for tickets.

Three's Company are pleased to announce that this year's run in Edinburgh, with Later Showers has been a great success. We had a wonderful time at C Venues and the play seemed to elicit some very powerful responses from the audiences. We were also thrilled to get 5 stars from edinburghguide.com as well as glowing reviews from Three Weeks and the Daily Mail. Check out our Reviews and Quotes page soon when we have uploaded them!
